Musical juxtapositions

This morning I listened to the Broadway cast recording of Spring Awakening, the show in which Matt DuMont has his first leading role.  The music and message of this show are overwhelmingly bleak.  Teens are full of angst and anger and so, so sad, as they try to figure out what life and love are all about.  This afternoon I am listening to the Broadway show, Bye Bye Birdie, also about teens growing up and falling in love, and the message is "put on a happy face," and get kissed by one special boy and be "sincere."   You would think these two musicals were about different species.   :)
