New Year's Day snowstorm

The new year begins with a bitter cold wind. Not one is out.
The snowflakes swirl.
and plaster themselves on the window panes.
The wind chimes are silent, lying on the porch floor
Blown off their pegs by the storm.
Snowed in, I sit here in perfect idleness, empty and still, saying nothing
Listening...
The snow begins to fall harder.
It hisses as it collides with the warm house.
I have no lofty sentiments to share,
Staying close to things themselves:
My dog and cats curled up by the fireplace;
Knickknacks, reminding me of trips taken long ago;
Books;
and house bound Geraniums in full bloom .
